In a major setback for Viagra manufacturers, the regulator has issued its guidance that generic drugs to be sold in Africa without a prescription.
In a statement, Pfizer confirmed that its European patent for Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is invalid on the basis that it is “inoperable and not suitable for human consumption”.
As per the patent application, it would “apply only to products marketed as ‘Viagra’ under the brand name Pfizer, Inc.”.
In its notification, Pfizer said that it has filed applications in Europe for a generic version of the drug, which will compete with Viagra in the market. The generic version is due to be launched in Europe in the summer of 2020.
The company was not involved in the proceedings.

The generic drug was manufactured by Pfizer and was sold to U. S. customers at pharmacies across the nation for $6-13 per pill.
The company was not immediately available for comment. However, an announcement from the FDA indicated that the drug had been approved as an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction and indicated that Pfizer had decided to make it available for those who have not responded to treatment with other drugs.
